Why We Do It
Our Story
My son Kodie passed away early morning April 26, 2020. The night before, Kodie got a ride to go see his biological Aunt and Uncle to show them the great man he had become. After 23 foster homes in his 19 years, he described to them his forever home, graduating high school, working on his first car, completing fire training, having a job and being a volunteer fire fighter. With that visit, he wore tactical pants, grease on his arms, a firefighter shirt, and a fire champion hat. It was his suit of armor and his pride overflowed. Fifteen minutes after leaving their house, he was fatally thrown from the backseat of a car.
Kodie had always tried very hard to protect other children from “the system”. And watching him become a man made it clear what to do in his memory. Out of his care for other out-of-home youth, and combined with his desire to help volunteer fire departments, Kodie’s Kids, Tomorrow’s Heroes was born.
